In Remembrance of Dr. Barbara Cone

  

The field of audiology has lost a visionary and pioneering leader with the passing of Dr. Barbara Cone on January 4th, 2025. A trailblazer in pediatric audiology, Dr. Cone dedicated over 40 years to advancing the understanding and practice of auditory development and pediatric hearing assessments. Her groundbreaking work has left a permanent mark on both the science and clinical practices in audiology.

Dr. Cone earned her PhD in 1979 from the University of Texas at Dallas, where she laid the foundation for her career dedicated to improving the lives of children with hearing impairments. Throughout her career, Dr. Cone was passionate about integrating research and clinical practice, striving to improve diagnostic tools and methodologies for pediatric audiology. For more than two decades, Dr. Cone shared her expertise at the University of Arizona, where she trained generations of clinical audiologists and researchers, influencing the direction of audiology education and practice. Her commitment to the next generation of professionals was reflected in her leadership and mentorship, which inspired countless students and colleagues to pursue careers in audiology and research. Dr. Cone was also a prominent figure within the professional audiology community. She was an active member of the American Auditory Society, American Academy of Audiology (AAA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Her contributions to ASHA were particularly notable, where she served on the Board of Directors as Vice President for Academic Affairs in Audiology from 2014 to 2016. She also earned recognition as an Erksine Fellow at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she expanded her international influence on audiology research. Dr. Cone’s legacy is one of innovation, education, and advocacy. She leaves behind a lasting impact on the field of pediatric audiology and a community of colleagues, students, and clinicians who are inspired by her passion, knowledge, and commitment to improving the lives of children with hearing loss. Her contributions will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of working with her.
