Live is Good, is Auracast Better? Real World Demonstrations of Auracast Broadcast Streaming
Jill Mecklenburger, AuD, GN Hearing

The new Bluetooth Low Energy Audio specifications are quickly having a profound impact on the audio world as well as the hearing aid industry. These specs support Auracast broadcast audio, which allows for individuals and places to share an audio stream so that multiple people with and without hearing loss can enjoy the same signal. Due to the low latency of the system, the fidelity and sound quality of the streamed sound is perceived to be equal to or better than the original signal. Streaming demonstrations were conducted with this technology utilizing GN hearing aids in a concert hall during a live orchestra performance. Eighteen participants utilized a beta version of an app to access streaming of the concert to their hearing aids. A post-concert survey was completed, with questions regarding connection and accessibility, audio clarity and fidelity, user interface and ease of use, as well as engagement and immersion. The results will be discussed, including implications for future applications of Auracast technology.
